Deafheaven were formed in San Francisco in 2010 as a duo of vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy. The pair soon expanded into a full band, and their debut album Roads to Judah appeared on Deathwish Inc. in 2011.

Drummer Daniel Tracy joined in time for the recording of Sunbather, released by Deathwish in June 2013. Its blend of black metal with shoegaze and post-rock textures won wide critical acclaim. Bassist Stephen Clark and guitarist Shiv Mehra joined the band around this period.

The band moved to Anti- for New Bermuda in 2015 and Ordinary Corrupt Human Love in 2018, then signed to Sargent House for their fifth album, Infinite Granite, released in August 2021. Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen, it leaned towards shoegaze and dream pop, with Clarke singing mostly clean vocals.

Deafheaven then joined Roadrunner Records, which released their sixth studio album, Lonely People with Power, on 28 March 2025. Again produced by Meldal-Johnsen, the record brought back the harsher black metal elements that had largely been absent from Infinite Granite.

The current line-up is Clarke, McCoy, Tracy, Mehra and bassist Chris Johnson.

Current line-up: George Clarke (vocals), Kerry McCoy (guitar), Shiv Mehra (guitar, keyboards), Chris Johnson (bass), Daniel Tracy (drums)
