Ohms is Deftones’ ninth album, produced by Terry Date, the man behind Around the Fur and White Pony. That reunion matters. This is the heaviest, most focused Deftones record in a decade, and also one of their most beautiful.
“Genesis” opens the album with real force, and from there it barely lets up. “Ceremony” is pure Deftones, a dreamy verse into a huge, crushing chorus. “Urantia” and “The Spell of Mathematics” show off just how good the band is at mixing weight and atmosphere, and Chino Moreno sounds fantastic throughout, switching from whisper to scream as only he can.
There are no weak tracks on Ohms. “Pompeji” is moody and slow-building, “This Link Is Dead” is one of the most aggressive songs they’ve released in years, and “Radiant City” rides a gloriously heavy groove.
Then the title track closes the album, and it’s simply one of their best songs ever. Ten tracks, no filler, and a reminder that Deftones are still in a league of their own.
