Fourteen albums in, the Montreal veterans tightened the screws. Unconquered is nine songs, all of them built for maximum impact, recorded and engineered by guitarist JF Dagenais at JFD Studio in Dallas and mixed by Colin Richardson with help from Chris Clancy.
Opener “The Killshot” sets the tone with a riff that bounces more than it blasts, and that groove-first approach runs through most of the record. “Underneath The Scars” and “Focused To Destroy You” are the heaviest moments, while “Icarus Falling” lets a bit more melody through without losing any weight. The lyrics, as the band put it, deal with pain and setbacks and fighting back, which suited a year like 2020 better than they could have planned.
Is it their most adventurous album? No. Some of the newer, almost deathcore-ish rhythms will split older fans. But it is focused, brutally loud and over in under forty minutes, and the best songs here stand with anything they released in the last decade.
