Sempiternal is the album where Bring Me The Horizon stopped being a scene band with a loyal following and became a big rock band with a future. Terry Date produced it at Angelic Studio, Jordan Fish came in for the writing and recording, and the band’s fourth album entered the UK chart at No. 3 and the Billboard 200 at No. 11.
“Can You Feel My Heart” opens slowly, built on electronics rather than riffs, and the vocals sound more desperate than angry, which suits the material. “Shadow Moses” is the obvious anthem, a chant made for festival fields, while “Sleepwalking” leans so hard on synth pads that some older fans cried betrayal. They were wrong. The hooks are sharp and the screaming never goes away completely.
“The House of Wolves” is the angriest thing here and a useful reminder of where they came from. A few songs in the middle run together, and the lyrics lean heavily on teenage angst. Still, few metalcore records of the decade changed as much as this one did.
