Trivium’s ninth album lands almost exactly where you want it to. After the short opener “IX”, the title track blasts off with thrash riffing, Matt Heafy switching between screams and soaring clean vocals, and a chorus built for huge rooms.
Producer Josh Wilbur gives it a crisp, punchy sound, and Alex Bent’s drumming is ridiculous all the way through. “Catastrophist” is the epic, melodic one moment and vicious the next. “Amongst the Shadows & the Stones” goes heavier, with Heafy at his most savage. “Bleed Into Me” is the breather, and a good one.
The title comes from a Philip K. Dick story, and the record carries that sense of unease without ever losing its grip. Trivium have rarely sounded this confident.
