Trivium – In the Court of the Dragon album cover

Trivium’s tenth album is the sound of a band on a hot streak. Josh Wilbur produced it, it was recorded at Full Sail University in Florida, and it picks up where What the Dead Men Say left off, only more ambitious and more confident.

After the short instrumental “X”, the title track crashes in with a riff that is pure Trivium thrash, then opens into a chorus Matt Heafy belts out with real power. “Like a Sword Over Damocles” and “Feast of Fire” are the hookiest songs here, but the epics are what make the record. “The Shadow of the Abattoir” and “Fall Into Your Hands” take their time and never feel stretched, full of twin leads from Heafy and Corey Beaulieu and tempo changes that Alex Bent eats up behind the kit. “The Phalanx” closes things on an epic note.

Mathieu Nozieres painted the cover, and it fits the music: dramatic and big, maybe a touch overblown, and all the better for it. Ten albums in, Trivium are writing some of the best songs of their career.
