Tomb Mold – The Enduring Spirit album cover

Four years after Planetary Clairvoyance, the Toronto trio dropped their fourth album with only four days’ warning, and it was worth the wait. Recorded with Sean Pearson at Boxcar Sound Recording over three years and mixed by Arthur Rizk, The Enduring Spirit takes the cavernous death metal of their early records and opens all the windows.

Opener “The Perfect Memory (Phantasm of Aura)” already shows the shift: clean, jazzy guitar passages from Derrick Vella and Payson Power drift in between the riffing, and Max Klebanoff still drums and growls like a man possessed. “Angelic Fabrications” and “Will of Whispers” carry a ’70s prog warmth that almost nobody else in death metal pulls off, while the long closing track “The Enduring Spirit of Calamity” is a proper journey. It’s still heavy, just in a smarter way. Album of the year material, simple as that.

Best tracks:

The Perfect Memory (Phantasm of Aura)
Angelic Fabrications
Will of Whispers
The Enduring Spirit of Calamity
