Guitarist and vocalist Dave Davidson started the band as Cryptic Warning in Boston in 2000, with bassist Anthony Buda and drummer Phil Dubois-Coyne. In June 2006 they changed the name to Revocation.
The self-released debut Empire of the Obscene (2008) was followed by three albums on Relapse Records: Existence Is Futile (2009), Chaos of Forms (2011) and the self-titled Revocation (2013). Rhythm guitarist Dan Gargiulo, who joined during the Relapse years, left the band in June 2020.
In April 2014 Revocation signed a worldwide deal with Metal Blade Records, which released Deathless (2014), Great Is Our Sin (2016) and The Outer Ones (2018). Netherheaven (2022), recorded as a trio with bassist Brett Bamberger and drummer Ash Pearson, featured guest vocals from Trevor Strnad and George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher.
New Gods, New Masters, the band’s fifth album for Metal Blade, arrived on September 26, 2025. Produced by Davidson and mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren, it deals with the worship of technology and artificial intelligence and features guests Jonny Davy, Travis Ryan, Luc Lemay and jazz guitarist Gilad Hekselman. It was the first album with rhythm guitarist Harry Lannon, who joined in 2023, and bassist Alex Weber.
Current line-up: Dave Davidson (vocals, guitar), Harry Lannon (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Alex Weber (bass), Ash Pearson (drums)
