A debut album this assured is rare. Spiritbox had been building a following with singles for a while, but Eternal Blue is where Courtney LaPlante, guitarist Mike Stringer and co. put it all together, twelve songs that swing from crushing, down-tuned grooves to dreamy, synth-washed pop without ever sounding confused about what they are.
LaPlante is the reason it works. Her screams on “Circle With Me” and “Holy Roller” are genuinely vicious, and then she turns around and sings “Secret Garden” and “Constance” with a softness that hits just as hard. “Hurt You” sits right on the line between the two. Architects’ Sam Carter turns up on “Yellowjacket”, and the duet is a monster.
Some of the quieter tracks in the second half blur together a little. Hardly a problem. This is the record that made Spiritbox one of the biggest new names in heavy music, and it still sounds fresh.
