Soilwork – The Panic Broadcast album cover

Peter Wichers came back. The founding guitarist rejoined Soilwork, and on The Panic Broadcast he plays, writes and produces. New guitarist Sylvain Coudret makes his studio debut beside him, with Björn “Speed” Strid on vocals, Ola Flink on bass, Sven Karlsson on keyboards and Dirk Verbeuren on drums. Jens Bogren mixed the record.

The ten tracks lean back toward speed. “Late for the Kill, Early for the Slaughter” opens at full tilt, “Two Lives Worth of Reckoning” keeps the pressure on, and “Deliverance Is Mine” got a music video. Strid still alternates harsh vocals with big clean choruses, but the record sounds hungrier and faster than anything they had done in a while. The deluxe edition adds the bonus track “Sweet Demise” and a DVD.

The numbers backed it up: more than 5,000 US copies in week one and a No. 88 debut on the Billboard 200.

Verdict: the most focused Soilwork album in years, even if a couple of mid-album songs blur together.

Best tracks:

Late for the Kill, Early for the Slaughter
Two Lives Worth of Reckoning
Deliverance Is Mine
King of the Threshold
