Gnosis is the eighth album from the Chicago instrumental trio, and the heaviest they’ve sounded in years. Kurt Ballou recorded it, with drums and bass tracked at Electrical Audio and guitars at God City in Salem, and the low end hits like a wall. Opener “Tupilak” makes that clear from the start, with Mike Sullivan’s guitar sounding enormous.
“Conduit” is the most direct thing here, all churning riff and Dave Turncrantz’s pounding drums. The title track, which also got the band’s first ever music video, is the real centrepiece. No vocals, no wasted parts, and it still feels short.
