Origin – Omnipresent album cover

Origin don’t do restraint, and Omnipresent doesn’t pretend otherwise. Well under forty minutes, John Longstreth’s blasts so fast they stop sounding like drumming and start sounding like weather, and Paul Ryan’s riffs folding over themselves in ways that make your eyes cross.

The new element is Jason Keyser, the band’s first album with him on lead vocals, and he gives the songs a lower, more guttural anchor. “All Things Dead” opens at full tilt; “Manifest Desolate” and “Unattainable Zero” have actual grooves you can follow, which counts for a lot here. Robert Rebeck recorded it in Kansas and Colin Marston mixed and mastered, and the bass from Mike Flores is audible throughout, which is rarer in this genre than it should be.

It’s exhausting by design. The short instrumentals give a few seconds of air. I respect it more than I return to it.

Best tracks:

All Things Dead
Manifest Desolate
Unattainable Zero
