Cryptopsy began in Montreal in April 1988 as O.C.D. (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), with drummer Mike Atkin, guitarist Steve Thibault and singer Dan “Lord Worm” Greening. The band soon became Necrosis and recorded several demos. In October 1991 it regrouped with guitarists Dave Galea and Steve Thibault, bassist John Todds and drummer Flo Mounier, who joined full time in November 1991. In September 1992 they adopted the name Cryptopsy, invented by Lord Worm.
The debut Blasphemy Made Flesh appeared in 1994, followed by None So Vile in 1996, now regarded as an influential cult classic of the death metal underground. Lord Worm left in 1997, citing health and financial issues, and Boston native Mike DiSalvo of Infestation fronted Whisper Supremacy (1998) and …And Then You’ll Beg (2000).
Martin Lacroix took over for the following tours and appears only on the live album None So Live (2003). Lord Worm returned for Once Was Not (2005), and Matt McGachy was announced as the new singer on 4 December 2007, debuting on The Unspoken King (2008). Bassist Olivier Pinard joined in January 2012 and the self-titled Cryptopsy followed that year.
After signing with Nuclear Blast in May 2023 the band released As Gomorrah Burns, their first album in eleven years. The ninth album, An Insatiable Violence, was released by Season of Mist on 20 June 2025.
