Oranssi Pazuzu’s fifth album is six long tracks of psychedelic black metal that move more like hypnosis than songs. Repetition is the main weapon. A bass line or a synth pattern loops until it becomes uncomfortable, and then the band piles on distortion, organ and hoarse, whispered shrieks until it all tips over.
“Uusi teknokratia” is the obvious entry point, a slow, wobbling groove that turns into something close to a panic attack. “Tyhjyyden sakramentti” goes further into krautrock pulse and electronics, and “Oikeamielisten sali” has the most traditional black metal violence on the record, though even that gets bent out of shape.
Closing with “Taivaan portti” is a smart move, ending on dread rather than release. This is not background music and not easy listening on any level. It is also the most original metal album of 2020, and one that keeps giving more on every spin.
