Twenty-nine years after Paradise Lost, Cirith Ungol released their fifth album, and somehow it sounds like they never stopped. Forever Black is raw, slow-burning epic heavy metal with the same strange, witchy edge that made the band a cult name in the first place. Nobody else sounds like this.
“Legions Arise” is the most direct song, “The Frost Monstreme” the most dramatic, and the title track closes the album on a heavy, doom-laden march. The vocals are an acquired taste, as they always were. Not everything works, and the production is rougher than some will like. Still, for a band this old to return with something this committed is worth celebrating.
