Myrkur – M album cover

Amalie Bruun took a lot of grief for Myrkur before anyone had heard a full album, and M is better than the noise around it suggested. It is also messier than its best moments promise.

The good stuff is very good. “Onde Børn” is the standout, and the switch between Bruun’s clean, choir-like voice and her rasp is handled with real confidence. “Hævnen”, with its straight metal guitar intro, is the most conventional song here and it hits hard. Recording parts in Oslo, including inside Emanuel Vigeland’s mausoleum, with Garm co-producing, gives the quiet passages a cold, cavernous echo you can almost feel on the skin. “Byssan Lull” is a lullaby and nothing more, and that’s exactly why it works.

The problem is flow. Eleven tracks, many of them short, and the record keeps stopping to set a mood instead of following one through. The metal sections, played with help from Teloch and Øyvind Myrvoll, are solid but rarely surprising. Still, as a sketch of what Myrkur could become, it holds up.
