Moonspell – Hermitage album cover

Hermitage is a slow-burning, introspective Moonspell record. It was recorded, mixed and mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone Studios in the UK, and it is the band’s first album without longtime drummer Mike Gaspar, with Hugo Ribeiro now behind the kit.

Anyone hoping for the fury of 1755 will be disappointed. This is atmospheric gothic metal with a lot of Pink Floyd-style space in it. “The Greater Good” and “Common Prayers” carry the strongest hooks, Fernando Ribeiro mostly sticking to his deep clean voice, while “All or Nothing” takes its time and builds slowly. The instrumental “Solitarian” works better than you’d expect.

It drags in places, and a couple of tracks feel unfinished. But the mood is consistent and very Moonspell.

Best tracks:

The Greater Good
Common Prayers
All or Nothing
The Hermit Saints
