Underneath is Code Orange’s fourth album, and it is a lot. Fourteen tracks of hardcore breakdowns, industrial noise and glitches that sound like your speakers are failing. Nick Raskulinecz produced it with drummer and vocalist Jami Morgan, with Will Yip co-producing, and the result is dense, chaotic and very deliberate.
After the intro “(deeperthanbefore)”, “Swallowing the Rabbit Whole” hits with a brutal, stop-start riff that’s pure Code Orange. “In Fear” goes even harder, while “Sulfur Surrounding” brings a big, almost grunge-like melody into the mix. The title track is the album’s best moment, a cold industrial grinder that somehow also has a chorus.
It’s not an easy listen, and the constant cut-ups can wear you out by the end. But nobody else in heavy music in 2020 was making a record that sounded like this, and that alone makes it essential.
