Elder – Omens album cover

Omens is the album where Elder move furthest from their stoner-doom roots. It’s five long tracks of progressive, psychedelic rock, with keys and synths now as important as the riffs. Georg Edert plays drums, and the band sounds looser and more patient than before.

The title track opens with a slow build into one of the best riffs on the record. “In Procession” is lighter on its feet, with dreamy guitar leads weaving over a steady groove, while “Halcyon” is the most spacious song here, drifting for long stretches before it finally opens up. “Embers” is the most immediate song of the five, and it’s gorgeous. Nick DiSalvo’s vocals stay understated, which suits the music.

Closer “One Light Retreating” sums up the whole album: melodic, layered, unhurried, with enough weight to remind you where this band came from. Not as heavy as some fans might want, but a beautiful, carefully crafted record.
