Some albums are released. This one feels handed over, carefully, like something that must not be dropped. The Ghost Of A Future Dead was finished in the studio more than two years before it came out, and by the time it reached us, Tomas Lindberg was gone. He passed away in September 2025, at 52. His voice is on every song, and the band say the title, the mix, the running order and the artwork are all exactly as he wanted them.
It would be easy to hear everything here through that loss, and impossible not to. But the first thing that strikes you is how alive it is. “The Fever Mask” opens at a sprint, three minutes of that old Gothenburg rush where the riff and the melody are the same thing, and Tompa’s voice tears through it with the same hoarse urgency it had thirty years ago. There is no farewell tone in his performance. He sounds like a man with plans.
Anders Björler is back on guitar for the first time since At War With Reality, which means the lineup that made Slaughter Of The Soul is together again. You can hear his hand in the sharp, cold leads that cut across the songs like frost on glass. Jens Bogren recorded and mixed it at Fascination Street, and the production is lean and bright, closer to the band’s classic attack than to the progressive detours of The Nightmare Of Being, though a couple of darker, slower pieces carry that album’s shadow.
Twelve songs pass in about 42 minutes. Titles like “The Dissonant Void” and “Det Oerhörda” read differently now, and there are moments, especially in the final stretch, where the words seem to reach past the music toward something the band could not have known they were saying.
The band called it his legacy. That is a heavy word to put on any record, and this one carries it. Not as a eulogy, but as proof of what he still had left to give.
