No distortion, no drum kit, and still one of the heaviest-sounding records of the year. Einar Selvik and Lindy-Fay Hella built Birna over four years, from 2020 to 2024, with Selvik himself playing lyre, horns, lurs, flutes, langeleik, kantele and drums. The recording, made at Fimbulljod and Solslottet and mastered by Tony Lindgren, gives every instrument room: the low drones feel physical, and the two voices sit close enough to touch. The fifteen-minute “Dvaledraumar” is the centrepiece, slow and hypnotic, and it demands patience. It earns it.
