Voivod’s fifteenth studio album was put together under pandemic conditions, and the title nods to that strange, split-apart way of working. You would never guess it from the results. Synchro Anarchy sounds like a band locked in a room together, sharp, wiry and slightly unhinged in the best Voivod way.
There’s more thrash in the riffing this time, and a bit more dirt, and it suits them. “Planet Eaters” is the standout, all knotty dissonant chords and a chorus that sticks. “Paranormalium” opens with that unmistakable sci-fi lurch, and the title track twists through about five ideas without ever feeling messy. “Sleeves Off” is the most direct punch here.
Francis Perron produced it at RadicArt Studio, and the sound is clear without being sterile. Michel “Away” Langevin drew the cover himself. Voivod still sound like nobody else.
