Acts of God is Immolation’s eleventh studio album and runs to fifteen tracks. Nothing about the basic approach has changed. The guitars still bend and slither around the beat instead of hammering out straight riffs, and Ross Dolan’s growl stays low, clear and unhurried over the top.
Paul Orofino recorded the band at Millbrook, and Zack Ohren handled the mix and master. The result is dense without turning to mud, and the drums have real weight. “An Act of God” and “The Age of No Light” are the clearest examples, both built on dissonant, almost sour chord shapes that drag the songs somewhere darker every few bars. “Noose of Thorns” slows things down and is better for it.
Fifteen tracks is a lot, and the middle stretch blurs together a little. Then “Apostle” closes the record with one of the best riffs on it, and that complaint mostly goes away.
Best tracks:
An Act of God
The Age of No Light
