There is no easy way into Cutting the Throat of God, and that is the point. Seven songs, almost an hour, and hardly a riff that behaves the way death metal riffs usually do.
Michael Hoggard’s guitar smears dissonance and strange, sour melody together, Paul Kelland’s growl hovers over it like a voice from the next room, and Jamie Saint Merat’s drumming breathes, lurches and swells rather than simply keeping time. Saint Merat also recorded and mixed the album and made its artwork, which may be why sound and image feel like parts of the same bad dream. The closing title track is the last word it deserves: vast, bleak and oddly beautiful.
