Messa’s fourth album goes looking in the 1980s, and finds something. The Italian band have folded early goth rock and dark wave into their doom, and The Spin is warmer, faster and more song-shaped than anything they’ve done. “At Races” rides a bass line Killing Joke would’ve kept, and Sara’s voice sits right on top of it, unhurried and huge.
“Fire on the Roof” adds synths, “The Dress” has a trumpet solo of all things, and it works. “Thicker Blood” brings back the slow, heavy Messa to close. Seven songs. Not one too many.
