Doom records rarely sound this patient, or this wet. Messa’s second album is a concept piece built around water and its rituals, and the Italians commit to the idea completely: long, murky intros, Rhodes piano dripping through the gaps, and guitars that only fully erupt when the song has earned it.
Sara Bianchin is the focal point. On “Leah” her voice floats over a slow, bluesy crawl before the fuzz swallows everything, and “Snakeskin Drape” shows she can carry a hook without ever pushing too hard. The paired “She Knows” and “Tulsi” are the heart of the record, a smoky, jazz-tinged drift that turns into the heaviest riffing on the album. “The Seer” and “White Stains” keep the tension simmering rather than boiling.
It is not a record for impatient ears, and a couple of the ambient passages stretch further than they need to. But Feast for Water has an atmosphere very few doom bands manage, part occult rock, part late-night jazz club, and it rewards headphones and a dark room.
