Dreamless is where Fallujah stop pretending to be a tech-death band that likes atmosphere and become an atmosphere band that happens to play tech-death. That’s going to divide people. The riffs are still dazzling and the leads soar all over the place, but the songs are wrapped in so much ambient haze and synth glow that the heaviness can feel oddly far away.
When it clicks, it’s gorgeous. “The Void Alone” brings in Tori Letzler’s ethereal vocals over a slow, aching groove, and it’s one of the best things they’ve done. “Abandon” is a hooky, melodic ripper, and the title track balances the dreamy and the brutal better than anything else here. The trouble is the length. By the time “Les Silences” and “Lacuna” drift by, the songs start blending together, and the fairly one-note growls don’t help separate them. Trim fifteen minutes and this would be a classic. As it stands, it’s a beautiful, slightly exhausting record.
