The “Kids” is gone from the name, and so is any sense that this Pittsburgh band are still a promising youth act. I Am King sounds like a group that has spent a year listening to sludge records and deciding that fast is overrated.
Converge’s Kurt Ballou produced and engineered it, and he gives the guitars a dry, ugly weight that suits the songs. The title track is a short, sharp opener, but the real character of the record shows up when it slows down. “Dreams in Inertia” drags its feet for five minutes, switching between screams and an eerie, almost deadpan clean vocal, and “My World” settles into a doom-heavy chug. “Slowburn” does exactly what its name promises.
Eleven songs in about half an hour, and almost nothing is wasted. When the album ends on “Mercy”, you want to start it again, which is the best thing you can say about a hardcore record.
