Some bands mellow with age. Asphyx just get heavier. Incoming Death is the first record with Stefan Hüskens behind the kit, and if anyone worried the old Dutch tank would lose traction, “Candiru” settles that in under three minutes of crusty, d-beat-driven fury, with Martin van Drunen barking like a man who’s been gargling gravel for decades.
Then the doom kicks in. “The Grand Denial” and “Subterra Incognita” crawl along on those enormous, rotten riffs Asphyx do better than anyone, the kind that make your speakers sound like they’re sinking into mud. “It Came from the Skies” has a thrashy swagger, and “Forerunners of the Apocalypse” is a catchy, mid-paced war march that wouldn’t be out of place on a Hail of Bullets record. Dan Swanö’s mix keeps everything thick and raw without turning it to sludge. Nothing here reinvents the wheel, but every song earns its place, and the balance of speed and crawl is close to perfect.
