Autopsy were formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in August 1987 by drummer and vocalist Chris Reifert, fresh from playing on Death’s Scream Bloody Gore, and guitarist Eric Cutler. Danny Coralles joined on guitar soon after, and the three of them have formed the band’s core ever since.

Signed to Peaceville Records, Autopsy released Severed Survival in 1989 and Mental Funeral in 1991. With slow, doom-heavy passages crashing into raw death metal, both albums are now regarded as landmarks and as a blueprint for death-doom. Acts of the Unspeakable (1992) went shorter and nastier, and after Shitfun (1995) the band split up while Reifert and Coralles moved on to Abscess.

Autopsy reunited for good in 2010 and have been as productive as ever since, with Macabre Eternal (2011), The Headless Ritual (2013), Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves (2014) and Morbidity Triumphant (2022), the first album with bassist Greg Wilkinson.

Ashes, Organs, Blood and Crypts, their ninth studio album, followed on 27 October 2023, barely a year after its predecessor, and was another dose of gory, horror-film death metal.

Current line-up: Chris Reifert (vocals, drums), Eric Cutler (guitar), Danny Coralles (guitar), Greg Wilkinson (bass).
