Dutch death-doom, ten songs, Axel Hermann on the cover and Dan Swanö on the mix and master. If you know Asphyx, you already know roughly what Deathhammer sounds like, and that’s fine.
The fast ones are fun. The title track is a two-and-a-half-minute stampede and “Into the Timewastes” wastes nothing. But the reason to own this is the slow material. “Minefield” and “We Doom You to Death” crawl along at a pace that makes most modern death metal sound nervous, and “As the Magma Mammoth Rises” closes the record like a landslide filmed in slow motion.
The vocals are as distinctive as ever, a strangled, high-pitched bark that sounds permanently outraged. Not original, not trying to be. Just very good at being Asphyx.
