After a couple of records that played it safe, this is Trivium sounding hungry again. The Sin and the Sentence pulls together everything they’ve ever been good at, thrash speed, metalcore punch, big clean choruses and harsh vocals, and puts it into the tightest set of songs they’ve released in a long time.
The title track is a statement of intent, nearly a full-band workout of riffs, solos and a soaring chorus, and “Beyond Oblivion” keeps the pace high. “The Heart from Your Hate” is the radio-friendly one, but it’s done with such confidence that it’s hard to mind. “Betrayer” and “The Wretchedness Inside” bring back the screaming and the aggression older fans missed, and “The Revanchist” is the album’s epic, packed with twin leads and tempo shifts that show off every side of the band.
Alex Bent’s drumming is a huge part of why it all works. This is his first album with the band, and his speed and precision give the songs a real kick. Josh Wilbur’s production is crisp and heavy without feeling sterile. “Other Worlds” is the one track that feels like filler, but otherwise this is a career highlight.
