Released on the band’s own Artemisia Records, Thrice Woven is a full-blooded return to blazing black metal, and it lands with more force than anyone had a right to expect. “Born from the Serpent’s Eye” opens on a storm of tremolo riffs and pounding drums, then Anna von Hausswolff’s voice cuts through the middle like light through a forest canopy, eerie and enormous.
“The Old Ones Are With Us” brings in Steve Von Till of Neurosis, whose weathered voice gives the song a ritual weight before the riffs take over. “Angrboda”, named for the giantess of Norse myth, is the fiercest stretch on the record, and Kody Keyworth, a touring guitarist for years and now a full member, thickens the guitar wall noticeably.
“Mother Owl, Father Ocean” is a brief, haunting interlude, just von Hausswolff’s voice and harp, and then “Fires Roar in the Palace of the Moon” closes things with a long stretch of controlled fury. The production stays raw without ever sounding thin. One of the best black metal albums of the year, full stop.
