Daemon finds Mayhem circling back toward their roots. Their sixth album is a straightforward, riff-driven record, and it’s all the better for it.
“The Dying False King” comes out swinging with Hellhammer’s relentless blasting, and Attila Csihar is in fine, theatrical form, croaking, chanting and howling over the top. “Falsified and Hated” and “Worthless Abominations Destroyed” lean into that cold, tremolo-heavy early-nineties feel without ever sounding like a pastiche. “Aeon Daemonium” is the epic, with a creeping, ritualistic middle section built on dissonant guitar work.
It’s a little long in the tooth by “Invoke the Oath”, and fans who loved the band’s weirder phases may find it safe. But as a lean, nasty black metal record from the genre’s most infamous name, it delivers.
