Dark Funeral’s seventh studio album keeps the Swedish black metal machine running at full speed. Lord Ahriman is still at the helm, Heljarmadr’s snarl is as venomous as ever, and Daniel Bergstrand’s mix gives the blasting room to breathe without sanding off the frost.
“Nightfall” and “Let the Devil In” are pure, relentless Dark Funeral. The surprise is “When I’m Gone”, a slower, almost doom-paced piece that shows the band can hold tension without a blast beat in sight. “Nosferatu” and the title track bring the speed back with tremolo riffs that are as catchy as they are vicious.
No reinvention here, and nobody asked for one. It’s a sharp, well-paced record from a band that still knows exactly what it is.
