The Otra is a river in southern Norway, running some 245 kilometres down to the sea near Kristiansand, and In the Woods… named their seventh album after it. It fits. Otra moves like water, slow and then suddenly swift, carving its course through melodies that sound warmer and more open than the band’s harsher early work.
This is what the Norwegian avant-garde veterans call their third incarnation, with Bernt Fjellestad on vocals, and he gives the songs a dark, dramatic weight. “The Things You Shouldn’t Know” opens in mist, “The Crimson Crown” gathers strength, and “The Wandering Deity” lets the current carry everything out to sea.
An album for long evenings and good headphones.
