Arcturus grew out of the band Mortem, founded by Steinar “Sverd” Johnsen, Jan Axel “Hellhammer” Blomberg and Marius Vold, before taking the name Arcturus. Kristoffer “Garm” Rygg of Ulver became their vocalist, and their debut studio album, Aspera Hiems Symfonia, was released in 1996 on Ancient Lore Creations.
The second album, La Masquerade Infernale, followed in 1997 on Music for Nations. The Sham Mirrors came out in 2002, after which Garm left the band. With Simen “ICS Vortex” Hestnæs on vocals, Arcturus released Sideshow Symphonies on Season of Mist in 2005.
The band split up in 2007 and announced in 2011 that they were reuniting for live shows.
Arcturian, the band’s fifth studio album and first new studio album in a decade, was released by Prophecy Productions on 8 May 2015. Its line-up included ICS Vortex, Hellhammer, Sverd, guitarist Knut Magne Valle and bassist Hugh “Skoll” Mingay.
