Coma is the first Gaerea album with clean singing, and that one change reshapes everything around it. Longtime producer Miguel Tereso gives the masked Portuguese band more room than ever: the tremolo riffs still rage and the blast beats still hit, but “World Ablaze” is built around a real chorus, and opener “The Poet’s Ballet” trades pure fury for layered, almost soaring vocals before the storm arrives. Ten songs, very little wasted. Purists may miss the unbroken assault of the early records. Everyone else gets Gaerea’s best-written album.
