Second albums are where hyped bands usually stumble. Uada don’t. Cult of a Dying Sun takes the hooded, melodic black metal of Devoid of Light and gives it more room to breathe, seven long songs that rely on melody and momentum rather than sheer speed.
“The Purging Fire” sets the template: a cold, rolling riff, Jake Superchi’s throat-shredding vocals, and a lead line that keeps circling back like a bird of prey. “Snakes & Vultures” is the most immediate thing here, while the title track is the real centrepiece, building patiently towards a melodic climax that would make any Dissection fan grin. “Sphere (Imprisonment)” and closer “Mirrors” push the atmosphere further, at times almost hypnotic.
If there’s a weakness, it’s that the songs share a lot of DNA, and by the last stretch the formula is familiar. But the formula is a very good one, and few American bands play this style with such conviction.
