Palimpsest is Protest the Hero’s fifth album and their first full-length since Volition in 2013. The wait was partly down to Rody Walker blowing out his voice, and you would never guess it. He sounds stronger here than ever.
The band also adds orchestration to the usual tech-metal frenzy, and it gives the songs more room. “The Canary”, written about Amelia Earhart, is all spiralling riffs and a soaring chorus. “From The Sky” and “Little Snakes” hit hardest, while “All Hands” and the closing “Rivet” show how much more patient the songwriting has become.
The short interludes (“Harborside”, “Mountainside”, “Hillside”) tie it together without dragging. Dense, angry, very clever, and the best thing they have done.
