Album number five from the Little Rock doom outfit, self-produced and recorded partly at Fellowship Hall Sound in their hometown. Six tracks, 51 minutes. The volume knob is turned down compared to Forgotten Days: there are long clean passages, synth pads, and a saxophone solo in the ten-minute “Endless Place” that works far better than it has any right to.
Brett Campbell’s voice carries most of the weight here, and “Where The Light Fades” is one of the best vocal performances of his career. Lyrically it’s all mental distress and isolation, which suits the slow, aching arrangements. The heavy riffs do arrive, notably in the closing “With Disease”, but this is Pallbearer at its most patient and melancholic. Not an easy first listen, but it keeps giving.
