Aphelion carries on where Pitfalls left off rather than retreating from it. Guitars are there when needed, but the songs are built around Einar Solberg’s voice, strings, synth pulses and Baard Kolstad’s busy, tasteful drumming.
“Running Low” is the obvious showpiece, slowly tightening until Solberg lets go with the kind of high notes few singers in metal can hit. “The Silent Revelation” has the most immediate chorus here, and “Nighttime Disguise” closes the record with its heaviest, most layered arrangement. It is not a riff album and it does not pretend to be. Some of the quieter middle stretch drifts a bit, but the peaks are very high.
