Black Harvest is the second album from South London’s Green Lung and the follow-up to 2019’s Woodland Rites. The ingredients haven’t changed much. Fat, swinging doom riffs, Tom Templar’s clean and slightly theatrical voice, and John Wright’s organ sitting right up front where a lot of bands would bury it. What has changed is the scale. Everything here sounds bigger and more confident.
The first half is close to flawless. “Old Gods” and “Leaders of the Blind” are pure hooks, the kind of songs you’re humming before the second chorus arrives. “Reaper’s Scythe” stacks vocals in a way that’s almost camp, and it works. “Graveyard Sun” slows things to a crawl and lets the organ do the talking, while closer “Born to a Dying World” goes for the big finish and earns it.
Wayne Adams produced the record at Giant Wafer Studios in mid-Wales, and the sound is warm and roomy rather than polished to death. Folk horror, the occult, old gods. Green Lung know exactly what band they want to be, and on this album they finally sound like it.
