Gojira – L’Enfant Sauvage album cover

Gojira’s first album for Roadrunner, recorded in New York at Spin Studios in Long Island City and co-produced by Joe Duplantier with Josh Wilbur. The title means “the wild child”, and it is a more focused, more direct record than The Way of All Flesh, trading some of the old sprawl for songs that hit hard and get out.

“Explosia” opens with the band’s trademark pick-scrapes and a groove so heavy it seems to bend the floor, then slows into something almost tender. The title track is tighter and more rhythmic, built on precise, punishing drumming. “The Axe” and “Born in Winter” are the moodier corners, while “The Gift of Guilt” is the best argument that this band can write a proper chorus without losing an ounce of weight.

The album debuted at No. 34 on the Billboard 200 with almost 11,000 copies sold, more than a hundred places higher than its predecessor. Deserved. This is the sound of a band arriving.

Best tracks:

Explosia
The Axe
