Floor were always a riff band with a pop band hiding inside, and Oblation lets that second band out more than ever. Fourteen songs in about forty-five minutes, most of them built on one enormous detuned figure and a vocal hook Steve Brooks sings like he’s half asleep and completely sure of himself.
“Rocinante” and “Trick Scene” are the proof: huge, simple, almost dumb, and catchy enough to stick for days. Kurt Ballou mixed it at GodCity, and he gets the low end to sound like the floor of the room is moving without burying the melody. “War Party” is the heaviest thing here, “Love Comes Crushing” the prettiest. The short interstitial tracks are less convincing and the middle stretch blurs together a bit, but the long, slow-burning “Sign of Aeth” and closer “Forever Still” pull it back.
