Six years after Wrong One to Fuck With, the Maryland trio came back with their ninth album, and it is exactly as nasty as you’d hope. Ten songs, 37 minutes, recorded in Baltimore with Steve Wright and mixed by Mark Lewis. No intros, no filler, no attempt to reinvent anything.
What still amazes me is how much groove John Gallagher squeezes out of riffs this technical. “Enlighten Through Agony” opens at full speed and then drops into the kind of slam that makes a pit explode, and “Feast of Ashes” does the same trick even better. Sean Beasley and Gallagher still trade growls like a tag team, and Trey Williams on drums is a machine, blast beats one second and a swinging half-time stomp the next.
Then there’s “Throw Them in the Van”, which is probably the most fun song about abduction ever written and already a live staple. “Compulsion for Cruelty” came out almost a year before the album and still sounds fresh here. If you love this band, you need this record. If you somehow don’t know them yet, it’s a great place to start.
