Disturbed – Immortalized album cover

Four years away, and Disturbed came back sounding exactly like Disturbed. That is both the selling point and the problem of Immortalized. Kevin Churko’s production is all polish and punch, and “The Vengeful One” does what a comeback single should: a stomping verse, David Draiman’s clipped staccato delivery, a chorus pitched straight at the back of an arena. The title track runs on the same blueprint and nearly matches it.

The middle of the record is where it sags. “You’re Mine” and “Fire It Up” lean on grooves the band wrote better fifteen years ago, and the lyrics rarely get past fridge-magnet defiance. Then the curveball: a slow, almost reverent take on Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence”, which lets Draiman hold back for three minutes before he finally opens up. It is the one moment here that genuinely surprises. The rest is solid, safe and exactly as heavy as rock radio allows.
