Torture is the twelfth Cannibal Corpse studio album, produced again by Erik Rutan and recorded between his Mana Recording Studio in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas. Vincent Locke painted the cover, as he has for so many of their records. It entered the Billboard 200 at No. 38.
None of that would matter if the songs were lazy, and they aren’t. “Demented Aggression” opens at full speed and never looks for an exit, while “Scourge of Iron” goes the other way, a slow, grinding mid-tempo piece that gives the album its best change of pace. “Encased in Concrete” is all stop-start precision, the kind of riffing that makes you notice how tight this line-up had become.
Rutan’s production is dense but readable – the bass is audible, the drums hit without sounding programmed. If you own any of the band’s recent records, you know the shape of this. It’s simply the sharpest version of it.
