The title track opens with what sounds like a machine breaking down, then drops into a breakdown so heavy it feels like a threat. Forever spends the rest of the album proving that threat was serious. Kurt Ballou and Will Yip split the production, and the result is huge and ugly in the right ways: the riffs crunch like scrap metal, the glitches and electronic stabs come out of nowhere, and the silences are as unsettling as the noise.
“Kill the Creator” and “The Mud” are the pit-starters, but the record gets interesting when it gets weird. “Bleeding in the Blur” is basically a grunge song with clean vocals, and it’s brilliant, while “Ugly” leans into alt-rock with a hook Smashing Pumpkins would recognise. Closer “dream2” ends things on a murky, unsettling note. Not every experiment works and a couple of tracks feel more like sketches than songs, but this is the sound of a hardcore band refusing to stay in its lane.
