This one split the fanbase, and it’s easy to hear why. Undying Light strips back a lot of the technical flash and the dreamy, layered atmospherics that made Fallujah’s name, swapping them for simpler, more direct songs built around big chugs and Scott Carstairs’ soaring lead lines. New vocalist Antonio Palermo has a hoarser, more hardcore-leaning roar than the band’s previous frontman, and it changes the colour of everything.
When it works, it works well. “Ultraviolet” is lean and urgent, and “Dopamine” and “Hollow” still have those gorgeous, glassy lead melodies floating above the riffs. The problem is that too many songs follow the same pattern: chug, shout, melodic lead, repeat. By “Distant And Cold” the formula is showing, and Palermo’s one-note delivery doesn’t help.
Not a bad record, just a frustrating one from a band capable of much more.
